World Taekwondo style sparring (Kyorugi) is an Olympic sport and the national sport of South Korea. Although the Olympics are considered the pinnacle of competitive Taekwondo, World Championships are also held on a four yearly cycle and further enable athletes to compete on the international stage.
World Championships are also held for Poomsae athletes as a way of demonstrating the fundamental Taekwondo techniques in a competitive format. As in any athletic competition, the rivalry between countries is fierce.
